Interlude: Letters

12/3/1347

A,

Ulan is dead, and in her place the Order of Epona has installed an eighteen-year-old acolyte. Who is this girl? Is she likely to be trouble? It is quite vexing to lose Ulan, but we knew she was expendable, even if I did expect to lose her closer to the end.

Should we approach this Callas de Navarre, or simply break off relations entirely with the Order? Please advise.

I still want you to finish gathering the children, no matter what. One of those is the successor; it's better to be safe than sorry.

C and T will be executing the first item on our list within the next week. We are finally in the endgame.

M

M,

I have investigated the new Headmistress, and have concluded that she means well but is entirely unprepared for her new position. Rather than being trouble, I think she may well take Epona's Order out of the game entirely until it's too late, which works in our favor. I advise leaving her well alone for the moment, at least. She's likely to do more damage with her inexperience than we could do purposefully.

I note that C and T have done their job. Advise that T alone take care of the next item. C is a little unreliable at the moment, it seems. The army at his back is making him less than cautious.

I have nine of the children and know where I can lay hands on two more, and you have one. The remaining four have yet to be located. I am beginning to think that they are either all dead, or living in such obscurity that they will never be found. The sacrifice is scheduled for the thirty-first.

As always, your servant,

A
